#7 Natural hazards
What should be done to mitigate the negative effects of a natural hazard?
In doing so, you need to gain an adequate understanding of what the natural hazard is and how they are caused. This is part of the Year 10 Science curriculum and so you should include:
Story board the formation of your chosen natural hazard from start to end with description of what is happening at each stage
Explain the effects (long and short term) on natural and man mae features, and the effects it can have on people and social organisations.
To help you gain this understanding, here are some recommended resources:
LEARNZ Geohazard virtual field: really good descriptive information about NZ Geohazards (earthquakes, volcanoes)
NZ Science Learning Hub: Has detailed sections on Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanoes,
Other Resources:
Fury of NZ’s hottest island– article from the NZ Herald. Quote:
“What we are looking at from here is two primary scenarios – a, it stops, and b, it develops into stronger eruptive activity.”
Which was more likely?
“Unfortunately, that’s the question we can’t answer, and it kind of reflects that state of volcanology.”
